The Vulnerability of Rural India

India has about 18 percent of the world’s population but only 4 percent of the world’s water resources (NITI Aayog Report, 2017), making it among the most water-stressed in the world. Rural areas face unique challenges, often unseen by the bustling urban centers. Among these challenges, the scarcity of clean water stands out as a critical issue. The lack of accessible and clean water sources creates significant difficulties, impacting health, education, and daily life. Accessibility to clean water, a basic human right, remains elusive for millions.

Health

The Comptroller and Auditor General reported in 2023 that water-related illnesses accounted for 30% of the total disease burden in rural areas, with children under 3 being most affected.

Women Empowerment

Data from the National Sample Survey Office in 2023 showed that on average, girls in rural households spent 2.5 hours per day collecting water, time that could have been devoted to studying and attending school.

Education

According to a 2023 report by the Ministry of Education, school attendance rates in rural areas dropped by 12% in the past year, with water scarcity cited as a major contributing factor.

Time

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the lack of tap water coverage in rural households forces people to spend over 5.5 crore hours each day collecting water for household needs.

Global Water Scarcity Crisis

Water scarcity is a growing global issue, affecting many communities. Accessing clean water is becoming increasingly difficult, and it’s crucial to start conserving water more than ever. Excessive use of groundwater, urban expansion, industrial activities, and climate change are worsening the problem.

About Neer
Nurturing a Sustainable Future

Project Neer is a youth-led initiative focused on community-driven and sustainable solutions to water scarcity in rural areas. We aim to instill a sense of shared responsibility among locals and work together to recharge groundwater and change attitudes towards water consumption. By building traditional water harvesting structures and implementing eco-friendly practices, we strive to create lasting impact and ensure clean water access for all. By engaging with local communities, conducting educational workshops, creating documentaries, and collaborating with experts, we aim to raise awareness about water conservation and the importance of sustainable resource management. Our holistic approach not only addresses immediate water needs but also promotes long-term environmental stewardship and resilience.

Mangar Bani Region

500 Population

400 Households

Mangar Bani is a culturally and historically rich forest, often neglected by the government. Its unique ecosystem has been under threat due to a history of government-sanctioned mining activities and overconsumption of water resources. Originally, Mangar Bani’s water sources were community-owned structures that provided a sustainable water supply. However, extensive mining and a shift towards individual water mechanisms like handpumps have collectively driven the water table down to 100ft. Almost all their water resources like lakes and wells –  that even wildlife and livestock would use – have dried up. This drastic depletion highlights the urgent need to save Mangar Bani, not only to restore its natural beauty but to ensure water security for the local community and preserve its rich biodiversity.
